Sciapteryx

There are nineteen species of Sciapteryx globally confined to the palaearctic region. In Britain there are two species and the genus is absent from Ireland.

Within the Tenthredininae, the Sciapteryx can be characterised by the following features. The antennae are shorter than 1.5 times the width of the head behind the eyes with the first flagellomere only as long as the following two flagellomeres combined. The occipital carina is more or less missing from the post-ocellar area though it is present on the lower portion of the occiput. The supra-antennal crests are weak and not divided into two crests centrally. The clypeus is truncated with sharply angled corners. The hind femur is shorter than the tibia. The hind tibial spurs are stout and at most only slightly longer than the apical breadth of the tibia.

Larvae feed on the leaves of Ranunculaceae.
