The genus Brachythops is a small genus of four species distributed across the holarctic regions. There are two species in Britain and one in Ireland (Brachythops flavens).

Within the Selandriinae, the Brachythops can be characterised by the following features. The antennae are shorter than twice the breadth of the head behind the eyes with the pedicel globular in shape and as long as it is wide. The first flagellomere is only slightly longer than the second. Each flagellomeres is slightly shorter than the preceeding one. The post-genal carina is absent. The labial palps and maxillary palps are three and four segmented respectively. The prepectus is present and separated from the mesepisternum by a deep groove. The mesopleura are each divided by a sharply inflexed suture. In the forewing the anal vein lacks a cross vein and the apex of the costa is swollen to greater than half the depth of the stigma. In the hindwing, the anal cell has a short petiole apically and the upper, middle cell RS is in contact with cell C. On the hind leg the first tarsomere is shorter than the combined length of the following three tarsomeres.

The larvae feed on sedges.
