Pontania dolichura (Thomson, 1871)
The only confirmed records relate to the Cairngorms. Significant confusion exists around this species relating to changes in understanding regarding names and foodplants. Benson (1958) stated that Pontania dolichura produced galls in six species of Salix. Liston et al. (2012) said that P.dolichura galled only S. phylicifolia. However, following the major paper on the gall-making Euura by Liston et al. (2017), E. dolichura is now considered to be found only galling Salix lapponum, a local and threatened mountain willow of the Scottish Highlands. The latest edition of Redfern & Shirley (2023) represents this latest position (although presumably earlier editions didn't). For the purposes of this review, only records specifying the correct foodplant have been included (Musgrove, 2024). See Liston et al (2017) for determination of adults.
Euura dolichura larvae feed on Downy Wwillow causing an elongated gall, often paired, on the upper side of a leaf.
