EUURA ANOMALOPTERA GROUP
Euura anomaloptera - Anomalous Leaf-galler
Nematus anomalopterus Förster, 1854
Tubpontania anomaloptera (Förster, 1854)
Nematus tuberculatus Benson, 1953
North to northern Scotland, apparently relatively frequent. Benson (1958) could only list three records for this species, suggesting either a significant increase or at least increased understanding of how to detect it. Detailed survey on the Isle of Wight found it in every hectad there. Most records that were associated with a tree species referred to Salix cinerea, a few to S. caprea and S. aurita, and none to S. phylicifolia. Liston et al. (2017) do not confirm the species as galling cinerea, caprea or aurita, but do list S. caprea as a host for Euura cyrnea (not yet confirmed in Britain). For the time being, records are taken at face value but it is possible the status of this species, or the assessment of these galls, may change in future (Musgrove, 2024).
See Liston et al (2017) for determination of adults.
Larvae feed on tea-leaved willow and likely other willows causing only one leaf edge to roll downwards.
